11:00 AM – Cash/Pay-day loans
Tyler Shymkiw, Councillor, City of Maple Ridge, British Columbia
An interesting bylaw was passed last week…in Maple Ridge British Columbia. The city won’t have any more payday loan or cheque cashing businesses opening up. It was passed with unanimous support from the mayor and council. Councillor Tyler Shymkiw says: “Payday loans are a significant contributor to the cycle of poverty in our community, with devastating effects on our working poor.” We have many similar businesses locally and pose the question: should we do the same thing here?
11:30 AM – Ohio – cop (NOT) shooting
Mark Valois, a former Toronto Police officer & retired use-of-force training officer. He also helped write the police curriculum for use of force in Ontario
An interaction between a police officer and an aggressive suspect came to a surprising end – following several stories in the news lately involving Police shootings. It happened on Thursday in New Richmond Ohio…and Officer Jesse Kidder is being praised for his restraint. He responded to a call which included a double homicide suspect who was possibly armed. The man verbally threatened police and refused to take his hands out of his pocket. At one point he actually charged at Kidder. The suspect, Michael Wilcox allegedly threatened to kill his fiancé and best friend and lead police on a chase through Kentucky and Ohio. While the situation ended peacefully, experts say this may set a precedent – and cause other cops to hesitate in life-threatening situations.
