11:00 – Mayfair Hotel
John Gazzola, Councillor, City of Kitchener & Heritage Kitchener committee member
The former Mayfair Hotel in Kitchener will be demolished for safety reasons. Issues with the building, next to City Hall, came to light after a water service break last weekend. Two separate engineering consultants’ reports were done – they both agreed there were numerous structural deficiencies which they say, cannot be repaired without jeopardizing the lives of workers. Mike Seiling, the city’s director of building and chief building official says this was not an easy decision to make –  and there was no other option but to issue the Order to demolish. Staff say in conjunction with the property owner, they will aim to save key heritage features such as brick from the building and the railing supports from the staircase. Kitchener Councillor John Gazzola says he’s disappointed by the news – and that it came ‘out of the blue’ – they thought the new owners were repairing the place…and that the city missed the boat. As there had been intent to designate the building as a heritage site, a special meeting this week will take that resolution off the table.

11:30 – Drunk Driving
Jolene Knott, President, MADD Waterloo Region
A man accused in a deadly drunk driving case that took the life of an 11 year boy – could see a controversial plea bargain go through, after all. Jeremy Huber from Wellesley was killed in the crash, just before Christmas in 2011. The case of 36 year old Jeremy Glenfield, has been before Kitchener court for some time now. A report suggests the plea bargain would see him plead guilty  to two of  the three crimes he’s accused of in exchange for 27 months behind bars. The proposed plea bargain was described by the judge as “not beginning to address the seriousness of the offences.” A second judge was involved recently – but it looks like the plea bargain is back on track – 27 months in jail and a four-year driving ban.
