IN STUDIO: Arlene Dowell, Midday anchor, 570 News
An interesting insight into the origin of narcissism. In Greek mythology, Narcissus what a hunter – known for his beauty. He was so in love with himself…that when he saw his own reflection in the water – he was unable to leave the beauty of it, and drowned. Study authors, Brad Bushman of Ohio State University and Eddie Brummelman of the University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University looked at the fixation of oneself – and the origin for it. Their research shows that children, who are treated by their parents as being inherently special and deserving of praise, are more likely to becoming narcissistic. Children were asked questions designed to measure narcissistic traits, such as feelings of entitlement. Parental behaviour was also tracked, such as how they praise their children – the result: overvaluing your child can lead them to overvalue themselves.
