10:00 – Mission in Iraq

Canada’s six month mission in Iraq is supposed to end on April 7th. Foreign Affairs Minister Rob Nicholson said last week that Canada would be in Iraq for the long term, “As I said, I indicated that we’re in this for the longer term to make sure that we do what we can to help.” What is unclear at this point is whether the death of Sgt. Andrew Doiron in a friendly fire incident will have an impact on the government’s plan. Three other Canadian special forces members were injured in the attack last Friday by Kurdish troops. Currently, Canada has 600 military personnel involved with the mission in Iraq, most of which are in Kuwait supporting the deployment if CF-18 fighters. We also have 69 special forces personnel in Iraq, advising Kurdish troops.
