11:00 – Oscars recap
Leslie James, Film Critic, 570 & 680 News
It was Neil Patrick Harris’ first time hosting the Academy Awards. He set a positive tone overall but wasn’t shy about poking fun at Hollywood types. He began the night with a statement that addressed the lack of diversity among the nominees, saying: “Tonight we honour Hollywood’s best and whitest, I mean brightest.” He did other bits like one in which he ended up locked out of his dressing room during a quick change, forcing him to head to the stage in his underwear. Back in another tux in the next segment, he declared that he was “a changed man.”

11:30 – Homelessness in Waterloo Region
Marie Morrison, Manager in Housing Service, Region of Waterloo
With the recent bitter cold spell, it’s another reminder of how vulnerable some people are here. In late November, we spoke with Marie Morrison with Housing Services of Waterloo Region. We are the first Canadian community to pilot the 20,000 Homes Campaign, which aims to permanently house 20,000 of our country’s most vulnerable people experiencing homelessness by 2018. Locally, sixty staff and volunteers canvassed the streets, shacked up in shelters, and stopped at drop-ins around the region to hand out the short survey to learn about the 339 homeless people in Waterloo Region. Meantime, Salt Lake City has been hailed for reducing homelessness by 72 per cent – they did so by building apartments for 2-thousand chronically homeless people. ‘Housing First’ is controversial because it’s free with no strings attached.
