The 24th Street Wailers are Juno-nominated, ready with a new album, and are performing tonight at Starlight in Uptown Waterloo.
The Blues/Rock outfit – who have attracted the likes of many folks including Jimmie Vaughan – hail from Toronto.
It was a cold day? Yeah, it might be a cold night, too. So warm up in Starlight. It’s gonna get hot in there.
Tell me about returning to the Region to perform
(24SW) We always have a great time in the KW area. Our first experience was at the Kitchener Blues Festival in 2013. The crowd was great and we played our hearts out. Since then we’ve been coming back to Waterloo a couple times a year. A real highlight for us is that we have so many friends in the area that are musicians. We always have at least a couple get up and play some tunes with us.
You perform all over the country. Where’s the one place you could perform over and over again?
One of the band’s favourite places in Canada is in Winnipeg. The Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club is a real deal honky tonk. And we know what that actually is from playing many in the Southern USA. The club’s owner is John Scoles who lived in Texas for a while and soaked it all up. The result is a great room full of great people. A real gem in Canada.
Juno nominated!!! Tell me about the excitement right now
To put it simply, we are excited. This is our first Juno Nomination and we are very proud of the our last album. It’s pretty mind-blowing that our album was chosen as one of the best in the entire country. We found out when we touring the USA last month and this show at the Starlight is one of our first shows back in Canada since it happened.
You’ve got a new album coming out soon! Tell me about the record
We recorded in Austin, TX with a genius producing and engineering. Billy Horton is his name and he played Bass for and produced Nick Curran’s albums. Nick Curran is a major influence on us. Billy also worked with us on our last album Wicked. Working with Billy is a great experience and the end result is amazing. Lindsay wrote all of the original material on the album and also selected the two covers that will appear on the album as well. This album is our first to feature Jesse Whiteley on Piano and even though he’s been in the group for some time he joined up after the last album was recorded so this is his first with us. We also have our new guitarist, Elliot Sowell on this album. Elliot has a real Texas Blues sound that is hard to come by and he is a welcome addition to the lineup.
If someone were to ask, “What do I expect from their show?!”, what would be your answer?
You are going to see a real Rock n’ Roll show, one that Little Richard may have done in his early career. It may get a little bit crazy or raucous and you will definitely have a good time. The band is on tour with only a few weeks off a year and the result is a tight sounding and looking show. You will remember it.
