Canadian Flag Anniversary

Events are planned across Canada today to mark the 50th anniversary of the country’s flag.

On this day in 1965, the maple leaf flag was officially flown for the first time on Parliament Hill.

Governor General David Johnston will mark the event today by unveiling a commemorative coin and stamp.

Johnston says the flag is so imbedded in Canada’s national life, Canadians could not imagine their country without it.

Google is marking the occasion by flying the red and white on its home page.
