10:30 – Paying Hockey Players
Vicky Grygar, Writer, Hockey in Society (hockeyinsociety.com)
It’s an issue that has been talked about at length – junior hockey organizations profiting off their players. Those Kitchener Rangers games you watch almost every Friday night at the Auditorium, with the 7-thousand fans, the local commercials, the ads around the rink, mean big bucks for the organization. The players are 16-20 years old and get paid $50-$150. Hockey in Society is a blog dedicated to examining and exploring critical social issues in hockey. The blog’s writers share three key traits: a strong passion for hockey; a recognition of the sport’s social and political importance in many societies, particularly in Canada; and a desire to discuss important issues within hockey in a public and accessible manner.
