February marks Black History Month

It’s Black History Month and local organizations are gearing up for a celebration.

Several events are planned throughout the Region to acknowledge the achievements and contributions made by people of African descent.

Jacqui Terry, secretary of the African Canadian Association of Waterloo Region, tells 570 News this is a month to celebrate our local diversity.

“Black History Month does give us a platform for people in our community who are making something of themselves, for youth who have vision and passion, who are putting on events and who are out changing the world,” she says.

Among the events is a talk, entitled You Have Greatness Inside of You the Team Subban Story, but Karl Subban, a father to three major league hockey players. This event will be held Sunday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. at the Adult Recreation Centre in Waterloo.

A Bring on the Sunshine musical festival will be held on Family Day – Monday, Feb. 16 – from 10a.m. to 6p.m. at Kitchener City Hall.

These events will showcase African heritage talents.

“People of African descent have made a tremendous contribution to building our community, building Waterloo Region, but the way our culture in North America is set up, it’s not always easy to see what they’ve done,” says Terry.
