10:00 – Waterloo City Council
In Studio: Dave Jaworsky, Mayor, City of Waterloo
Some interesting tweets by Ontario’s ombudsman last night about the city of Waterloo’s council meetings. “Has Waterloo uncovered some clever and sneaky stratagem to get around the open meetings law?” Read one…another: “umm, no – you can’t play municipal musical chairs to get around the law. What’s happening here is called serial meetings.” Andre Marin went on to say “it’s amateurish and illegal, it’s like covering up your license plate so the cops can’t run your plates when you speed.” These comments arose after (new) Councillor Bob Mavin resorted to using the freedom of information act to get his budget questions answered. The city is currently discussing budget issues, ahead of the February 9th vote. Mavin was told that his question, pertaining to historical spending, would have to go to a vote. He then withdrew his question. However, he says the issue extends beyond this; citing a lack of transparency and closed door meetings. One way to get around Ontario’s open meeting laws are to limit the amount of councillors attending to three, hence the tweets from Ontario’s’ ombudsman.

10:30 – Hockey parents gone wild
Rolland Cyr, GM Kitchener Minor Hockey Association
Have you ever seen those parents at your kids hockey game? The ones who yell at their son or daughter to move faster, hit harder, score more. Or those who berate the referee for getting the call “wrong”? Well, The Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association is hoping to combat that unruly behaviour. Officials with the organization say parents have specifically been targeting referees, and incidents have climbed to an all-time high. Officials say if the behaviour does not stop soon, they’re planning to ban all spectators from Vancouver-area Island stands for an entire weekend, and possibly during playoffs. As a huge hockey community ourselves, we reached out to the General Manager of the Kitchener Minor Hockey Association – Rolland Cyr to see what the situation locally is like. (***Friday, January 30th – Activa Sportsplex Blood donor clinics and OneMatch swab events for players John Divo and Trayton Smith.***)
