12:00 – Helping Northern Canadians
Amanda Mallalieu, former St. Mary’s resident, gathering donations
How much do you pay at your local grocery store for a cabbage? This week – they’re on sale at Food Basics for $1.47. Meanwhile in Nunavut, buying a head of cabbage will run you about $28 dollars. A box of laundry detergent? You’re looking at $47 dollars. And a case of water – a whopping $105 dollars. These prices are what drive Jennifer Gwilliam of Vancouver Island, who spends her days organizing food care packages for people in Canada’s remote north. She’s the founder of Facebook group “Helping Our Northern Neighbours”, created last summer. The group matches people who want to donate packages of food and other necessities with those who need it most. A federal program called Nutrition North, which subsidizes food retailers’ costs of flying products to remote northern communities – is little help to the consumer.

12:30 – Fantasy Sports

If not careful, fantasy sports can become an addiction instead of a friendly game. That’s according to Tony Cutillo, a Fantasy Sports Expert who says Fantasy Sports Addiction are to blame for deadbeat parents. He says the average player spends more than eight hours a week perfecting his or her team, which could be the first signs of a problem, as you’re focusing on your mobile device rather than your child’s real live sporting event. According to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association (yes, that’s a thing!) North Americans spend 467 dollars per person – or about 15 billion dollars in total playing fantasy sports – roughly 11 billion of that is spent on football.
