10:00 – Charlie Hebdo cover
The news magazine targeted in last week’s terrorist attacks in France published a controversial issue today. The cover of the Charlie Hebdo magazine features the Prophet Muhammad, holding a sign that says “Je Suis Charlie” or “I am Charlie.” Overhead are the words “All is forgiven.” The move is unprecedented as they’re printing 5 million copies of the magazine by the surviving members. (Regular circulation just over 60-thousand) Fifteen-hundred copies of the latest Charlie Hebdo issue will be available in Canada on Friday. Newsrooms across the country have been engaged in debate – to print or not to print – that is quite literally, the question. Rogers is the parent company of 570 News – and senior management has decided that affiliated websites will provide a link to the cover, as published by MACLEANS magazine, also a Rogers property. As we hear now, our affiliate, City News in Toronto had this discussion on-air last night.
10:30 – 2-million dollar snow dump
Kelly Galloway-Sealock, Councillor, City of Kitchener
On Monday, Kitchener city council considered a number of requests during an all-day session on the capital budget. Among the items was a request for money so the city can create a new place to dump snow. Currently the city dumps snow on a place they lease, but the owner is planning to develop the site, and after this Winter, Kitchener won’t be able to dump there anymore. The new site needs to have good access to the road, and also carries tough environmental controls…the price tag for a new snow dumping ground? $2 million dollars, which Galloway Sealock calls ‘ridiculous.’
