First snowfall wreaks havoc on area roads

For many a quick drive to work turned into a traffic chaos this morning.

The first significant snowfall made for a long and slippery drive to work and kept police busy

Over 200 crashes were reported in town and on highways around the region.

A snow squall warning was  issued and black ice covered many roadways.

Regional police received 141 calls for accidents from 5 am until 1 this afternoon.  An additional 15 involved injuries.

Spokesperson Olaf Heinzel says typically they receive around 90 calls when the first snowfall arrives.

He says many reasons could be behind the increase, including the time of day which of course was early in the morning, catching many off guard.

As of 10 am Cambridge OPP had received 61 calls.

Callers to the 570 news midday show were quite frustrated by the conditions and other peoples driving abilities.

Heinzel says everyone needs to properly clear their cars off  and communicate effectively with other people including other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
