SOUTHEND, Sask. – Some families in northern Saskatchewan are relieved after five teenagers were found safe and sound after being missing in the wilderness for several days.
The four boys and one girl aged 13 to 17 were rescued yesterday from Malcolm Island in Reindeer Lake.
All were in good health but were taken to a health centre in Southend as a precaution.
The teens were reported missing last Thursday when they failed to return from a moose hunting trip.
Simon Jobb, a local councillor with the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, says the community is relieved to have the teens home.
Mandy Maier of the R-C-M-P said earlier in the day that strong winds, large waves and dropping temperatures were starting to hamper search efforts.
The teens were equipped for overnight camping and it’s suspected they took shelter on the island after the winds picked up and a cold front moved in.
