McCrae plaque unveiled in Guelph

A provincial plaque commemorating Canadian wartime poet Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae has been unveiled in his hometown of Guelph.

McCrae is famous for his iconic poem “In Flanders Fields” which he wrote after losing a close friend during the First World War.

The new plaque details McCrae’s life both before and during the war and also describes how he came to write his famous text.

The poem eventually inspired the use of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.
