Even before M-Ps vote on Canada joining in the air war against Islamic State militants, the government has deployed an advance team to the Middle East. That team is finalizing details on where Canadian warplanes will be based and working on the logistics for the mission. Both the N-D-P and the Liberals plan to vote against Prime Minister Harper’s decision to commit Canada to a six-month mission, partly out of concern we could be dragged into a lengthy quagmire. Meanwhile, new Ipsos Reid poll indicates that 64% of Canadians support a further deployment with Canadian air power to the region.
The poll finds that two thirds (64%) Canadians ‘support’ (29% strongly/34% somewhat) Canada sending Canadian Forces fighter jets to participate in airstrikes against ISIL targets in Iraq’, while one in three (36%) ‘opposes’ (16% strongly/21% somewhat) Canada’s participation in the potential mission.
