Local teacher charged with sexual offences

A teacher with the Waterloo Region District School Board has been arrested and charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.
Regional Police say they arrested Ian Sommer two days ago, but has been released with a promise to appear in court November 14th.
Police say the alleged incident involving a student took place at a school.
No further details will be released at this time in order to protect the identity of the victim.
The Waterloo Region District School Board have issued a statement on the alleged incident:
“We are very concerned about these disturbing allegations against the staff member. Student safety is always our first priority. We are fully cooperating with the Waterloo Regional Police Services as they continue their investigation.”
Regional Police have confirmed to 570 News that Sommer has been suspended ‘indefiniately’ at this time.
