One lucky boy in Grade 5 is getting set to live his dream.
Daniel Holm from John Sweeney Catholic School is the Kitchener Fire Department Junior Fire Chief for a Day.
Fire Prevention officer John Kosh says Holm will get to launch the theme of “Fire Prevention Week”.
“[It] is something that occurs every year at the anniversary of the big Chicago Fire that happened and this week’s theme is ‘Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month’,” says Kosh.
Holm will strap on the hat and grab the hose at 9 a.m. Friday when he’s picked up at his school.
“Then he gets to go in the fire truck, run the siren and the horn, do a tour of the station, but he’ll also go up in the aerial ladder and put out a fire with the fire extinguisher and go with the fire crews to train finding someone in a smoke filled environment,” adds Kosh.
“Most people know to change their batteries once a year,” says Kosh. “A lot of people don’t seem to have grasped yet that you have to replace your smoke alarms every ten years, even if they’re electric smoke alarms, because the smoke sensor doesn’t stay accurate; and make sure you have a home escape plan.”
Fire prevention week kicks off on Sunday.
