11:00- How young is too young?
Arlene Dowell, 570News Anchor and Reporter
Local schools begin “active shooter” drills, with children as young as 5-years old learning what to do in an emergency situation. Dowell says it was a tough day yesterday when her 5 year old son told her they did a practice lockdown at school. He said they have to hide and have to stay quiet, that the principal would lock the classroom door and they would need to keep one window open so the police could see in. And not only as a parent but as a human being it was hard to hear the story coming from the mouth of someone so young. This is the world we live in? What did we practice in school? Firedrills.

Kitchener will receive a new riding as part of a legislative expansion that will go into effect after the 2018 provincial elections. There will be 15 new ridings in all, increasing the legislature from 107 to 122. Kathleen Wynne, who was re-elected with a majority in June, announced the expansion of electoral boundaries last week in her “mandate letters” – a series of letters written to her cabinet ministers about what is expected during their tenure. “The ministry’s priorities include … working with the Attorney General to bring forward a legislative proposal pertaining to Ontario’s electoral boundaries,” she wrote in a letter addressed to herself as the minister of intergovernmental affairs. The federal boundaries were revised in 2013 and are revised every 10 years. The revision will go into effect in October’s federal elections. This will boost Ontario’s seats in the House of Commons from 106 to 121. Riding changes will go into effect in next October’s federal election, adding a new riding to the region.
