Homecoming festivities in Waterloo on Saturday night turned ugly in the area of State Street at Fir Street.
One thousand people filled the streets and police were the targets of flying bottles.
It took one hour and almost 43 officers to disperse the crowd.
Inspector Daryl Goetz says the received a noise complaint call from a neighbour.
He says when officers arrived they called for back up and that is when the bottles started to fly.
Damage was caused to several vehicles including police cruisers that were struck by the bottles.
A 19 year old male from Guelph was arrested and charged with assaulting police with a weapon.
Inspector Goetz says the warm weather, under age and early morning drinking plus more first year residence building in the football field area were just some of the reasons the situation got out of control.
Officers were checking social media but Goetz says when one party would end students in large groups would just use something like twitter to find the next place.
