It’s Shinerama time again in the region.
Coordinator Shannan Hall reminds us, the fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis research actually got it’s start at Wilfred Laurier University.
“There was a few years when Wilfred Laurier donated to a local charity doing it, and then when it became a national fundraiser, it was with Cystic Fibrosis Canada, so that was 50 years ago that started.”
If you’re out-and-about today, it’ll be hard for you not to see them.
“We have around 70 cites across Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and we have a couple in Elmira,” says Hall. “People will be standing on street corners, raising money, and people will just like throw money out their car windows.”
It has students from almost 60 university and college campuses across Canada taking part.
This year’s goal is $1-Million nationwide. Hall says our region is always one of the top fundraisers.
“Last year, we got around $90,000 and it was raining. Ideally if the weather was better, we would raised more than that, but I would be totally content if we could do about the same,” says Hall. “There are people who come out every single year with a jar of change that they say is just for shine day.”
Shinerama is Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser.
