Central Library hosts opening ceremony

The four year construction and renovation of the Central Library located on Queen Street in Kitchener has been completed and now it’s time to celebrate!
Today from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., the library will be hosting an opening ceremony for the community to take part in.
There will be architects on hand to give tours, crafts and activities for the kids, along with performances by the KW Symphony, The Lost and Found Theatre Group as well as Children’s performer Erick Traplin.
Dale Dyce is the Marketing and Communications Coordinator with the library and tells 570 News the project added 25,000 square feet to the building.
“There is such a large children’s library, and a new addition on the back with a lot of high ceilings. It really gives Kitchener a state-of-the-art, modern library and it is something the citizens of Kitchener have been deserving.”
Although the building was opened to the public in May, Dyce adds today the community can tour the new layout which he says now has a lot of natural light and space.
“When you come to the Central Library you will be see the ambiance and the newness of it. Our architects have done a great job at bringing natural light into the build now. It has transformed from an older 1960’s building into a modern space with a lot of light and a lot of new technology.”
Visitors will also get a chance to see demonstrations of the new digital media lab, take part in eBook clinics, and make crafts with the kids.
Dyce adds the new building is really a place people will want to come and stay.
“That is all what we have been trying to achieve with the library. This is a place where people don’t just come and get books and leave but they come and make a day of it.”
The $40 million project also added a three level underground parking garage, which he says will better accommodate the facility’s needs.
