12:00- Peter Cheney, Globe and Mail Drive Columnist
Waterloo Region just opened up its 12th charging station this week. Globe and Mail driving columnist Peter Cheney drove a $140,000 Tesla Model S from San Diego to Whistler. His 2,800-kilometre journey was a test of both the electric car and the future of transportation. The Tesla Model S is like nothing Cheney’s ever driven before. Accelerating up to highway speed, the only sound is the rush of high-speed air over the car. It reminds him of flying a glider – the noise and vibration of internal combustion are gone, replaced with an intoxicating whoosh. Cheney says he’s tried several electric cars before, but they all felt like glorified golf carts. Not the Tesla. It’s blindingly fast and relentlessly futuristic: On the dash is a giant display screen that gives the cockpit the feel of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

12:30- Andrea Miller, Dietitian and Spokesperson for Dietitians of Canada
Willpower, not a branded diet, appears to be the key to shedding unwanted pounds. A new study done by researchers at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children and McMaster University says it doesn’t matter what kind of diet you choose to go with, they have the same result so long as you stick with what you choose. Scientists stacked the weight loss results of several popular diets together to see which were most successful. On average, consumers lose between 17 to 19 pounds. But by the end of the year, some of that weight is already gained back. The team pooled data from 48 studies involving 7,286 individuals; the median age was 46, the median weight 94 kilograms. The studies included 11 branded diets: Atkins, Weight Watchers, Zone, Jenny Craig, LEARN, Nutrisystem, Ornish, Volumetrics, Rosemary Conley, Slimming World and South Beach. They included “moderate macronutrient” diets – diets that give or take, involve 60% carbohydrates, 15% protein and 25% fat.
