Students struggle as tuition costs continue to climb

With books, supplies and tuition, some students are wondering if they’ll be able to leave school with a degree, or just debt.

The Students Federation of Canada are hoping to get more funding from the federal government, as they ask for $2.5 billion dollars to help post-secondary students.

Regardless of the program, students remain united on one front, tuition costs are just too high.

“I’m in the arts and business program, and I have the hearty meal plan, so I play about $8,000 for one semester” says Scott Kavanagh. “Hopefully a decent chunk of my co-op will help pay for it.”

“Yeah, they’re high” says Courtney. “My sister pays $10,000 for her per semester, which is ridiculous since she’s only doing graphic design.”

“What could be useful is some more transparency about what we pay goes to” says Scott. “I don’t know if what I’m paying is too high or too low, it’s hard to say.”

The Students Federation of Canada are also asking for an expansion of the Student Loan Forgiveness Program.
