Today will be a scorcher as highs are expected to reach 40 degrees with the Humidex.
This has prompted Environment Canada to issue a heat advisory for Waterloo Region and surrounding areas.
Extreme heat can affect anyone with heat related illnesses but as Peter Ellis with Waterloo Region Public Health tells 570 News, the very young and the very old are at the greatest risk.
“The young ones, they don’t have as much muscle and they lose heat a lot faster, so that is why they need to stay hydrated. People who are old, the same reason, as well they may have other complicated factors that may predispose them to high-heat, high-humidity.
Ellis also has some tips to beat the heat, such as staying hydrated and reducing the time spent outdoors.
“Drinking plenty of cool water is probably the best way, also seeking shade, wearing light coloured clothes and taking a cool shower or bath are great ways to keep cool in the heat.”
