Today marks the beginning of a project that will shape the region’s future for years to come. Regional officials and other dignitaries will be celebrating the ground breaking of the ION project at 11am at the Dutton Drive train yard in Waterloo. Among those expected at the ceremony include Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, Steven Del Duca, Kitchener-Waterloo MP Peter Braid as well as Regional Chair Ken Seiling.

The Region of Waterloo has released the details of ION construction that will begin at 12 locations over the next six months. This includes five for the bus rapid transit line and seven along the light rail transit corridor. ION staff have said they will continue to meet with residents and businesses who may be affected by the road restrictions and road closures this construction will cause. Construction can take up to three years to complete and will start underground. “The objective is to go underground first and complete that so the road is rebuilt and then working on the track side itself. This allows us to allow the traffic to be back on the road,” said Darshpreet Bhatti, Director of Rapid Transit. Those within 100 metres of ION construction will receive written notice before the work begins.
