Farmers face an uncertain future

The first fall killing frost is the end of growing season for farmers.

A lot of area crops are corn and soybeans.

Mark Whales is a farmer and president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture.

He says right now everything is green and lush which would be okay if we were ten days earlier in the calendar.

The fact is he says, they do not know when the weather is going to change this fall. If they have a frost free September and majority of October then things will be fine.

Wales goes on to say there has been frost in the region as early as August 29th, back in 1982.

An early frost could also effect consumers. According to Wales if there are no products for grocery stores they will have to ship in vegetables from other locations and that could mean higher prices. Prices of manufactured food that use corn as a base, could also go up.
