10:00    Is age a factor in Politics
They say with age comes wisdom; but there are other traits and troubles that can tag along. Health issues can pose various impediments and the rate at which we accomplish tasks often slows. As most people age, they tend to do less, simply because they can’t do as much. But there are always exceptions. Take for example Mississauga’s Hazel McCallion, who at 93 years of age still serves as mayor, though she’s not running for re-election this fall. Here in Cambridge, regional Coun. Jane Brewer announced this week she’ll be seeking another term. At the age of 90, the longtime politician maintains she’s in good health – she consulted a doctor before filing her candidacy papers. Yet, even though her experience is unrivalled, some might question her ability to do the job for four more years, at least at the pace and with the fullness residents demand of their elected representatives. There are, of course, many people who continue to work long into their senior years. But is it the same for a private sector employee like TV news anchor Lloyd Robertson or a celebrity for public consumption like Joan Rivers as it is for an elected official? It begs the question: should there be a cutoff age for politicians?

10:30    Anick Losier, Director of Media Relations with Canada Post

Physicians are urging Canada Post to halt plans to require a doctor’s note for individuals to keep home mail delivery, saying doctors are already buried in paperwork.Over the next five years, Canada Post will phase out door-to-door home delivery, switching customers to community mailboxes. Advocates for seniors and disabled groups immediately complained about the plan, saying it would be difficult for some Canadians to make their way to a central mail area, especially in winter. Canada Post, which begins the switch over this fall with 100,000 addresses including parts of Oakville, said it is prepared to offer accommodation or assistance to ensure everyone has access to their mail. It then asked anyone who believes they will have difficulty to reach a community mailbox to inform officials, sending out questionnaires.
