Kitchener Utilities gas rate decision deferred

The Finance and Corporate Services committee has voted to defer a decision on gas rates for Kitchener Utilities customers.

A report recommends that rates increase by 4.7 per cent – which works out to about $40 a year for the average homeowner.

However, Ward 3 Councillor, John Gazzola tells 570 News that’s too high.

He’s made a recommendation on the ‘fixed delivery’ component. Rather than increasing it from 69 cents a day to 73, he wants to see it capped at 70 cents.

Gazolla is aiming for the increase to come in at just under 2 per cent – which would mean about 30 dollars for the average homeowner.

Gazolla adds, “our utility rates are much, much too high, and I want to get things closer to the inflation rate.”

Mayor Carl Zehr says, “setting gas rates is a complex issue. Our role, as council, is to set the policy, which we did, and these are the rates that fell out of that policy.”

A decision is expected to be made August 25th.
