Benny’s Restaurant re-opens after fire

A popular family restaurant in the City of Waterloo is back in business after a massive fire shut it down a little over a year ago.

Benny’s Restaurant officially re-opened on July 17th.

For Lindsay Warning, who has waitressed at the restaurant for around four years, the re-opening was like a homecoming of sorts.

“Benny’s is like a family, so it’s nice to have the family back,” says Warning.

On July 21st, 2013, a faulty circuit in the Benny’s sign at the front of the restaurant sparked the blaze.

Damage was almost double what was quoted, coming in around $1-million and forcing the business to stay closed longer than expected.

“It was hard,” says Warning. “I took the day off that day, and all the girls called me and said, ‘get in here.’ It was devastating.”

The Weber St. N restaurant has a newly renovated space, but the same classic menu.

“There’s been a few things added [and] a few things taken away,” Warning says, “but we kept all the things that the regulars and everyone came to Benny’s for.”
