The Israeli military says a rocket was fired from Gaza at Israel as a five-hour humanitarian cease-fire came to an end. We cannot ignore the tremendous suffering of those who live in Gaza today. And we must resist the temptation to reduce a very complex situation to a simplistic formula – one that pits Israel as a western-style democracy struggling against Hamas, which is seen as the embodiment of all things evil. Israel has the right to enjoy security and peace, as does any state. So too, Palestinian Arabs have the right to live in safety and dignity. oreover, just as the international community condemns attacks on Israel, it also recognizes that despite a century of missed opportunities and failed negotiations, Palestinians should be allowed to have their own state. What began as a dispute over land has become so much more than that. Aggressive actions and cruel reactions have added fuel to the fire. Today, advocates for dialogue, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence are drowned out by a cacophony of vengeance and pain. Israelis and Palestinians have been the primary protagonists, but regional and international governments have also played their parts.

Woman claims to be Mike Duffy’s unacknowledged child. Growing up in Peru, Karen Duffy was always told her father was a famous Canadian journalist. For most of her 32 years, first growing up, and now raising her own family in Lima, Peru, she has believed that her father is the Canadian journalist-turned-politician Mike Duffy. And that she is the product of an unlikely affair between her mother-a convicted drug mule who served time in Kingston, Ont.’s Prison for Women and then an Ottawa halfway house-and a man who was, at the time, among the most famous figures in this country. Over the decades, she and her mother say, they have tried to reach out to Duffy on many occasions but, frustrated by the silence, Karen has dragged a private matter into the public sphere, filing suit against the once Conservative senator in a Peruvian court, seeking to formally establish that he is indeed, her biological father. Mike Duffy is faced with a choice-either acknowledge the love child, or provide a sample of his DNA to disprove her contention.
