A local cab driver was allowed to continue driving taxi after he was charged with sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl he drove home in 2013. The problem has prompted local police and the region to form a working group to improve communication so it doesn’t happen again. Meanwhile, last year it was found out that the regional committee charged with regulating local taxi drivers didn’t meet once in 2013 to review driver violations uncovered by routine record checks. The Region of Waterloo’s licensing and retail committee is made up of elected officials. The region licenses cabbies and only the region can take licences away.

10:30- Dr. Robert Mann, Senior Scientist with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
Almost 50 % of Grade 12 students who drive and more than one-third of all licensed youth in high school say they’ve texted while driving in the past year, according to an ongoing survey of Ontario adolescents. The finding is from the 2013 Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey, a wide-ranging biannual measure of youth mental health, well-being and risk behaviours conducted for CAMH. The survey collected data from more than 10,000 middle and high school students through anonymous questionnaires that addressed subjects as varied as whether they feel unsafe at school (15%) to how often they play video games (20% said daily). Health professionals say the survey results show more needs to be done to warn about the dangers of distracted driving.
