The Canada 55+ Games will take place in Alberta this time around, but in 2016 Guelph may be the city to welcome the competitors.
The choice is between Guelph and the City of Brampton.
Athletic director at the University of Guelph, Tom Kendall says that they are still hopeful despite the stiff competition.
“We know that we are up against a tough opposition in Brampton, but we’re optimistic that we can offer all of the things that we need to to run a first class event within the city and specifically on this campus.”
Kendall continues that Guelph would be a great place for the games since they can host all of the events in one spot.
“It becomes more like an Olympic village concept where everything is on one site and it’s much more convenient for competitors so we’re hopeful that that’s going to be a a very strong selling point.”
The games promote physical and mental health and wellness among adults 55 years and older. More than 2,000 competitors compete annually in events like ice hockey, badminton and even scrabble.
The bid presentation takes place on August 25th, and Guelph will find out if they will play host the day after.
