Anglers will be casting their lines at the Grand River Bass Derby today.
Adults, teens, and kids will compete to see who can catch the biggest bass in the river, with rules in place that competitors must release their catch back into the water alive.
“I think [a 21 1/2-inch bass] was the largest recorded, but if you get a 20-inch bass, you’ll probably win one of the three prizes,” says Harold Lauber, the Chairman and Fundraiser of the Grand River Bass Derby.
2014 marks the 28th year the fishing tournament has been running.
“It started out very small,“ says Lauber. “We were probably registering 150 when it first started, and now it’s grown to the largest bass derby in Ontario.”
All of the proceeds from the derby go towards improving fishing opportunities and public access to the Grand River.
