Fire forces evacuation of J.W. Gerth Public School

It was an abrupt end to classes for students at J.W. Gerth Public School in Kitchener.

The school was evacuated after a small fire broke out in the electrical room yesterday afternoon.

The school board says everyone got out safely but the school will remain closed today as the clean up continues, and Extended Day programs are also cancelled for today.

Yesterday was the last day of classes for public elementary school students, but for some, the evacuation meant they left some of their belongings behind.

The board says to monitor its website to find out when they’ll be allowed to return to the school to pick up their things.
