Regional nurse heading overseas to support war hero

A Grand River Regional Cancer Centre nurse is travelling overseas to support a Second World War hero.

Chemotherapy nurse Anne Schmidt is flying to the netherlands today to accompany Bill Ramakers, a 92-year-old Second World War Veteran from London, Ontario.

Schmidt tells 570 news that Ramakers wish was to visit the city of Rotterdam, where he served his country.

“With the help of a social worker at the nursing home he lives at in London, a letter was sent to the department of defence in the Netherlands. Now the government in the Netherlands are bringing him back.”

Schmidt was connected to Ramaker’s family through a colleague and was asked if she would be interested in going.

Ramaker will be honoured at two Veterans Day events in the Netherlands, including an exclusive ceremony in the presence of King Willem Alexander.
