Blackberry to post first-quarter results

Blackberry will release it’s fiscal 2015 first-quarter results tomorrow before the markets open. Analysts expect revenue of about $970-million and a loss-per-share of about $0.25 in the quarter ended May 31.

The company is in a transition period, as they plan to move towards the ‘Internet of things’ to create more web connected, non-computer devices.

“We see this now in our homes with remote activated thermostats, things that are controllable via smartphones, smoke detectors and things like that, that are pretty commonplace right now” says independent technology writer, Mark McArdle. “More and more devices are going to be connected to the Internet.”

He adds that overall the news won’t be positive, adding that BlackBerry will have to reassure its investors that its new ambition can build profit, compared to their smartphone business.

“The good news is that it should appear that they’re losing less money on paper than they were a year ago. They reduced costs” adds McArdle. “Ultimately, we look at how the ecosystem is growing or shrinking. It looks like it’s still on the shrinking side of things.”

As an incentive for investors, Blackberry also announced today that they’re adding the Amazon Appstore in the next update to it’s operating system this fall.  The move will give users of the BlackBerry 10.3 operating system easy access to thousands more of the most popular Android apps and games.
