Waterloo Region’s summer business program

The Waterloo Region small business centre kicks off its summer company program at Kitchener City Hall today.
The event takes place from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm
Rob Clement, a small business advisor who has been running the program for fourteen years, attributes the program’s rise in popularity to the amount of attention entrepreneurship has received lately.
“Entrepreneurship has really taken on a flair. The schools, the high schools, the universities are promoting it more as career choices and I really think that young people have a desire to run their own business and a lot of them have some fantastic ideas on what to do with it,” Clement said.
The program offers students a chance to run their own businesses and do exactly what a business owner would. From opening a business account, to how to file taxes and handle social media.
Clement also noted how the number of women has increased compared to 14 years ago, when he started running the program.
“I’ve been running most of the program for 14 years now and at the beginning, there was definitely more guys than girls, but now there’s a pretty even split,” Clement said.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will receive $3,000 to start their own businesses.
