Ontario’s three main party leaders are set to debate Tuesday with polls indicating the June 12th election has become a two-way fight between the Liberals and the Progressive Conservatives.
Though polls have suggested varying outcomes in terms of a Liberal or Tory government, a minority or a majority government, the New Democrats consistently remain stuck in third place.
Jonathan Malloy, chairman of Carleton University’s political science department, expects Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne and Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak to largely focus on each other in tomorrow’s debate.
He says Wynne will no doubt be attacked over the gas plants scandal, while Hudak will have to defend his plan to cut 100-thousand public service jobs.
Western University politics professor Cameron Anderson says that unlike Wynne and Hudak, N-D-P leader Andrea Horwath will have adopt strategies on multiple fronts.
Anderson expects Horwath will be put on the defensive for triggering the election by refusing to support an N-D-P-friendly budget, as well as her perceived shift to the political right.
