For the ninth year, the Cambridge and North Dumfries Doctor Recruitment committee is hosting 10 medical students from the University of Toronto.
The Rural Ontario Medical Program allows various communities the opportunity to host students for a week at the beginning of their program.
Recruitment Coordinator, Donna Gravelle tells 570 news that it’s a great way for students to get hands-on medical experience. “They’re first and second year medical students, so some of them haven’t had a lot of experience with medical procedures so they’ll be able to follow family physicians and specialists. Also we want them to get to know Cambridge, so hopefully they’ll think of returning here when they’re ready to – either for rotations or electives, or to start a practice.”
It’s not all work; students also get to go sightseeing, tour the Grand, and will help out with the Cambridge Food Bank’s BBQ.
Since the late 1990’s, about 65 family physicians have been recruited.
