A Cambridge teacher who faked cancer will avoid spending time behind bars.
34-year-old Breanne McGuire was given a conditional discharge after pleading guilty to fraud over $5,000. The plea was a joint submission by the Crown and defence.
The judge referenced what were “very unusual circumstances” in the case including that McGuire faked the illness to get attention and sympathy, not money, as well as mental health issues she’s dealing with that may have temporarily convinced her she had cancer.
The Record says McGuire apologized in court Tuesday, saying it was never her intention to hurt anyone.
The joint submission also pointed out that McGuire has made restitution.
$14,000 was collected at a fundraiser organized by teachers at Hespeler Public School.
