Online security experts calling on companies to improve the way they keep our private information private – and possibly replace traditional passwords. Cracking even a complicated password doesn’t take much effort these days, said Skillicorn.”I think it’s pretty clear that the day of passwords is rapidly coming to an end,” he said. “The internet was never designed to be a secure system. The conventional methods that use passwords are crumbling against brute force attacks.” But what comes after “Password123” remains unclear. Biometrics, such as finger printing and iris scanning, has flaws, Skillicorn said. Putting in a system “multi-factoral syndication”- where more than one piece of information is required- seems to be one of the best options currently available, he said. “That gives you some kind of hardening, but it’s not a silver bullet.”

Last Friday, Lenovo Canada had an online “Door Buster” sale that saw many of its laptops drastically discounted. The best deal, the top-of-line Y410P, was listed at $279 – a savings of around $600. Customers across the country got their credit cards out and placed their orders. Then Lenovo started sending out cancellation notices over what they called a “pricing error.” Lenovo’s website continued to advertise the laptop at $279 for another eight hours after they confirmed the error.
