According to a new study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the number of hours needed to pay for university tuition has soared almost 150 percent since 1975.
Alastair Woods is the Chair of the Ontario branch of the Canadian Federation of Students. He says summer jobs just do not cover the growing costs of getting a degree
“It is now impossible for young people to work in the summer and to pay just the base cost of their tuition fees. Never mind rent, groceries or the text books that have a new addition every year.”
The study found that students have to work five hundred and seventy hours at minimum wage to pay a year of tuition. That is up from two hundred and thirty hours hours in 1975.
Woods says it is not just university costs that are increasingly expensive, he says college programs can cost up to $10,000 a year.
