11:00am- Rachel Bower, Director and Filmmaker, Re: There’s an invasion taking place in Canadian waters. Each year an underwater army of non-native sea creatures is increasing their presence. With names like sea squirt, oyster thief, and green crab they may not sound dangerous, but they’re putting the entire marine ecosystem – and thousands of jobs – in jeopardy. Fishermen and scientists are working together to combat these destructive sub-sea invaders, but it’s an up-hill battle. Invasive Species is a half hour documentary that will explore several aquatic invaders that are wreaking havoc in the Maritimes – tunicates and the European green crab. The film will introduce viewers to several fishermen who are developing innovative ways to keep their industry alive and the biologists who are using scientific means to develop a plan of attack against these destructive invaders.

While outrage has always thrived in North American culture, it’s a more urgent and influential presence in today’s 24-hour news cycle world in which anyone with an opinion can speak up and major corporations and politicians actually listen. And the new outrage is a force – one that can galvanize people to a cause – but also lead to knee-jerk decisions and strip the nuance from public debate.
