WRPS report $1.7 million surplus for 2013

The Regional Police budget is a completely different story this year. The 2012 budget landed in the red while they achieved a $1.7 million surplus for 2013.

Chair of the Police Services Board, Tom Galloway tells 570 News that works out to a 1.3% surplus of the entire budget of $135 million.

“The surplus is attributable to a fair bit of extra revenue that came from various sources as well as some small surpluses in the salary account and some of the other operational accounts.”

Overall, he says this is typically what the police budget should look like. The deficit of just under $1.8 million was the first that the police services saw in over a decade.

“There is a fair bit of relief; we knew that there would be a modest surplus. This is a little higher than we anticipated a year ago.”

The surplus will be put into the IT and general reserve funds, which helped pay for the deficit last year.
