The 16 cm of snow we got on Wednesday certainly didn’t help the morning commute Thursday morning.
The 401 EB saw numerous issues with several tractor trailers spinning out and blocking lanes for several hours.
Staff Sgt John Mraud is Detachment Commander of Cambridge OPP and tells 570 News they were extremely busy due to the number of collisions on Thursday morning.
“They are stretched to the limit and are going from call to call…fortunately at this point we haven’t had anything that’s overly serious in regards to personal health…the roads are very very icy and extremely slippery.”
Mraud says some vehicles just can’t make it up hills – especially tractor trailers that are half full or empty. On top of all that, salt just can’t get the job done with these colder temperatures.
And it’s not just commuters that have had a rough time this winter. OPP Commissioner Chris Lewis says they have lost a record 40 cruisers to collisions this winter alone. All of those incidents occurred while officers were attending accident scenes with their lights flashing.
