A motion will be tabled a week from today by Mayor Doug Craig — saying that Cambridge residents should not have to pay for the Region’s LRT project.Craig says taxpayers should only fund express buses, as that’s what the city is getting.
He hopes that Regional Councilors will take constituents’ concerns into consideration when making a decision.
“There’s a lot of anger in this Regional Community. How they react is really up to them to make a decision. I certainly think that, on the issue of fairness, the vote should be on the side of letting Cambridge pay for what it gets – which is express buses.”
Craig also told 570 News that the the bus line that Cambridge has (from Conestoga mall down to Ainslie street) will not produce any development in the future.
He says if you want to go from one city to the other, you have to change and transfer – which discourages people from using public transit.
The rapid transit project calls for light rail in Kitchener and Waterloo, and express buses in Cambridge.
The Region says there are future plans to extend the rail line to Cambridge, however no funding has been allocated for that.
