Sidewalk violations on the rise

The number of sidewalks that aren’t being cleared of snow and ice this year is on the rise.
By law enforcers with the city of Kitchener say they’ve had operation crews on over 100 sidewalks in the city, and in total more than 950 sidewalks have had violations this Winter.
“Pedestrians will end up on the street” says Shayne Turner, Director of By Law Enforcement with the city of Kitchener. “Even areas where it may be passable for a normal person to walk, we have to keep in mind that there are people who have to push baby carriages and strollers, as well as people in strollers and motor assisted scooters that can’t navigate as well as we can on foot.”
Residents are required to remove all ice from sidewalks as well, as they can become a hazard for people who need to walk on those pathways.
“It’s on the higher end of the scale” adds Turner. “It’s not as high as last year. Then we recorded approximately 2,000 violations where as right now, we’re at about 1,000 with another 300 or so open files. It’s high, but I’m not sure that it’s going to be as high as last year.”
If you do have mobility issues, there are local agencies that can come and clear the snow for you.
