Local MPP working to improve benefits for volunteer firefighters

MPP for Kitchener-Conestoga Michael Harris is demanding fairness for full-time firefighters who volunteer in a leadership role in local township departments.

As it stands now, those “double-hatters” are not guaranteed full benefits if they develop a work place illness such as cancer.

Harris was a guest on 570’s Gary Doyle Show and says the government needs to close the gap.

“Right now, there is the risk that if it’s deemed that it would have been a township employer their benefits would have been dramatically reduced. That provides too much uncertainty, too much risk for those firefighters, and we have seen some depart already in Wellesley, and we need to close this gap immediately so that we don’t have any more that depart.”

Harris hosted a roundtable discussion earlier today with local firefighters in Wellesley Township.
