Chrysler Group LLC says it is no longer seeking financial assistance from the federal and Ontario governments to revamp its two Ontario assembly plants.
The auto giant says it notified officials of the decision to withdraw its request for $700 million in subsidies earlier this week.
According to a statement from Chrysler, it said that the projects were being used as a “political football” that will not benefit the company.
The comments come hours after CEO Sergio Marchionne reportedly told a news conference at the Geneva auto show that an official announcement on the fate of the Windsor plant will be made within 24 to 48 hours.
A spokeswoman for Chrysler Canada said she couldn’t confirm the reports about whether or not the company will move its minivan production from Windsor.
The auto giant has asked the federal and Ontario governments for subsidies, as part of an overall investment of $3.6 billion, to keep its production of the new Chrysler minivan in Windsor.
